I work in healthcare, everyone puts their achievements after their name/email signature. Soooooooooo many letters; it's an internal game we play: Who has the most letters in their signature?
If you earned it, shout it from the rooftops. Add those letters to your signatures, 100% PMP, CCIE, MCSE - all of them!!

Per your first point:

I was always confused by the notion that mental suffering can be measured across people.

As engineers, we have a tendency to measure everything - latency, memory usage, CPU cycles, MTTR, whatever-metric-is-now-in-fashion, etc. But the mere attempt of trying to position your own suffering against that of your peers degrades both of you to biological machines, tune-able to a fault.

I'm a HUGE advocate for measuring the reality you live in, in order to improve it. However, I intentionally exclude my pain from being aggregated into any sort of numerical form. It's deep, and complex, and ever-changing. It's not yours to compare against, like some gruesome scoreboard. It is mine.

Mental troubles are real, and prevalent, and kill people. Just because someone has been through "more" than you, it does not mean that you feel the pain any less. You're not a crybaby, you're not spoiled, you're not entitled. You're suffering. Big fucking difference.

Great to see this, Matt! I think key to Hipsterism is laziness. I honestly don't believe it stems from pretension, it's just that it's easier to quote someone or drop a name or make a reference because it does most of the work for us. If you can make a joke or a point just by saying a word, you don't have to put in the effort, and honestly we can't always be prefacing every comment with the history of everything. I truly believe the road to Hipster is paved with good intentions, but if we really want to grow a community we need to go the extra mile to bring everyone into the conversation. We need to be wary of creating 'the other' (full disclosure, reference to DODChicago - but it's cool the videos are online: https://www.youtube.com/use.... I think if we're aware of the tendency, and open to including people new to the movement without sighing at the thought of explaining ourselves, we'll work it out.

evite is handy -But they DO SPAM THE HECK out of people. I have one "junk" email that I use for all my online shopping etc and one private email that only a few friends and family members have. Been using it for 8 years without issue. A friend had a party and used my private email instead of the junk one…I was INUNDATED with HUNDREDS of junk mail messages---that was absolutely EVITE. EVITE SPAMS!!!
