However, I intentionally exclude my pain from being aggregated into any sort of numerical form. It's deep, and complex, and ever-changing. It's not yours to compare against, like some gruesome scoreboard. It is mine.

Mental troubles are real, and prevalent, and kill people. Just because someone has been through "more" than you, it does not mean that you feel the pain any less. You're not a crybaby, you're not spoiled, you're not entitled. You're suffering. Big fucking difference.

Re: Matt’s Top 10 Reasons Internet Friends Are Better Than Real Friends

Whenever your having a crappy day it's easier to talk to them because they're there to support you no matter what. I think key to Hipsterism is laziness. I honestly don't believe it stems from pretension, it's just that it's easier to quote someone or drop a name or make a reference because it does most of the work for us. If you can make a joke or a point just by saying a word, you don't have to put in the effort, and honestly we can't always be prefacing every comment with the history of everything. I truly believe the road to Hipster is paved with good intentions, but if we really want to grow a community we need to go the extra mile to bring everyone into the conversation. We need to be wary of creating 'the other' (full disclosure, reference to DODChicago - but it's cool the videos are online: https://www.youtube.com/use.... I think if we're aware of the tendency, and open to including people new to the movement without sighing at the thought of explaining ourselves, we'll work it out.

Re: Hipster DevOps Happens To The Best Of US

This is (in part) pretty close to the abstract I have worked out in my head for my opening remarks at DevOpsDaysRox ! :D

Re: Hipster DevOps Happens To The Best Of US

Do you have any idea how hard it was to write this post without using any inside, hipster jokes?
